Lothar Herbert Matthäus, born March 21, 1961 in Erlangen, is a German footballer who became a coach. Matthäus is captain of the German team who wins the 1990 World Cup. He is for nearly twenty years one of the emblematic players of the German selection by participating in 5 World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994 and 1998) and 25 competition games (which is a record). The only trophy that escapes is the Cup of European Champions Clubs despite two finals played in 1987 and 1999. Considered one of the best footballers of his generation, he receives the Golden Ball in 1990 and is appointed Best Footballer of the Year FIFA in 1991.
